The Virtual Urban Heat Leadership Academy will introduce residents to environmental concepts that have historically affected underserved communities. The program is being offered by Phoenix Revitalization Corporation and The Nature Conservancy. Participants will develop:

  • Awareness of current issues in urban heat, water and air quality.
  • A broad awareness and understanding of heat-reducing solutions for grassroots leadership.
  • Vocabulary necessary to have an improved understanding of heat-related issues.
  • A better understanding of how to make change through local political systems.
  • Advocacy skills required to communicate community needs.

The goal of this program is to build the capacity of existing and/or potential community leaders so they can engage with and advocate for cooler and healthier communities through the use of heat-reducing nature-based solutions, as well as to promote awareness of these solutions.

The 5-month long Academy will be held virtually. A combination of virtual discussions on zoom provide participants opportunities to build relationships with others in their cohort and online lessons provide participants the flexibility to learn at their own pace. The self-paced lessons can be accessed through Conservation Training, a free online learning platform.
